Natural Stone Surface Finishes

The same slab of travertine or marble can look and perform like an entirely different product depending on its surface finish. For specifiers, the finish decision affects aesthetics, slip safety, maintenance burden, and long-term durability. This guide breaks down the five most common natural stone finishes and explains when to use each one.

1. Polished

Polishing involves grinding the stone surface with progressively finer abrasives until it achieves a mirror-like reflective sheen. The process closes surface pores, enhancing the stone’s natural colour depth and veining patterns.

ProsCons
Maximum colour depth and visual drama Slippery when wet (R9)
Lowest porosity of any finish Shows scratches and etching easily
Easy to clean on flat surfaces Requires periodic repolishing in high-traffic areas

Best for: Hotel lobbies, reception counters, feature walls, bathroom vanity tops, low-traffic residential flooring. Not recommended for: outdoor paving, pool decks, commercial kitchen floors.

2. Honed

Honing stops the grinding process before the stone reaches full polish, producing a smooth but matte surface with no reflective sheen. It is the most versatile finish and the most widely specified for commercial projects.

ProsCons
Smooth, contemporary matte appearance Slightly more porous than polished
Better slip resistance than polished (R10) Stains may be more visible on light colours
Hides minor scratches and wear Requires sealing for stain protection

Best for: High-traffic commercial floors, shopping centres, residential living areas, bathroom floors, staircases. Honed marble and travertine are the default specification for most interior flooring projects.

3. Tumbled

Tumbling involves rotating stone pieces in a drum with abrasive materials (sand, gravel, water) to round edges and create a naturally weathered, antique appearance. The resulting surface has a soft texture with slightly rounded corners.

ProsCons
Warm, rustic, lived-in aesthetic More porous — requires thorough sealing
Excellent slip resistance (R11–R12) Uneven surface can be harder to clean
Hides chips, scratches, and ageing gracefully Limited to smaller tile formats (typically ≤ 40×40 cm)
Cool underfoot in direct sunlight Not suitable for very formal interior settings

Best for: Pool decks, patios, outdoor terraces, Mediterranean-style interiors, spa and wellness areas, Provencal and Tuscan design schemes.

4. Brushed

Brushing uses rotating wire brushes or abrasive brushes to texture the stone surface. The result is a lightly worn, soft-touch finish that falls between honed and tumbled in terms of texture depth.

ProsCons
Natural, organic texture without extreme roughness Slightly higher maintenance than honed
Good slip resistance (R10–R11) May not suit ultra-modern minimalist designs
Available in large-format tiles and slabs Surface can trap fine dust in textured areas
Comfortable barefoot on terraces

Best for: Covered terraces, contemporary rustic interiors, restaurant floors, boutique hotel corridors, bathroom floors where grip is needed without extreme texture.

5. Flamed

Flaming exposes the stone surface to extreme heat (typically 2,000°C+), causing mineral crystals to shatter and pop, creating a rough, highly textured surface. This finish is primarily used on granite and certain hard limestones — it is not suitable for marble or travertine due to their calcite structure.

ProsCons
Highest slip resistance (R12–R13) Rough texture — not suitable for barefoot areas
Extremely durable, virtually scratch-proof Dulls the stone’s natural colour significantly
Excellent for high-traffic exterior applications Limited to hard stone types (granite, basalt)

Best for: Public plazas, commercial pavements, building entrances, driveways, exterior staircases, ramps. The finish of choice when safety regulations demand the highest possible grip rating.

Finish Selection Summary

Finish Slip Rating Porosity Indoor Outdoor
Polished R9 Low
Honed R10 Low–Med Covered
Tumbled R11–R12 Medium
Brushed R10–R11 Low–Med
Flamed R12–R13 Medium
